Email Etiquette
Top Ten Best Practices
- Have a professional email just for your job search
- Use your first and last name@_____.com
- Outlook offers advantages to having your email account redirected to it. We will discuss this in our training.
- Make sure you use 10 - 12 point font – Arial or Times Roman
- Your email should be a display of your professional writing abilities.
- What NOT to do:
· Start with “Dear”
· Use symbols, smiley faces, cutsie fonts
· Forward all kinds of ‘bulk’ emails – especially those that are unprofessional
· Hit send too fast. Watch out for Reply All and Forward
· Forget to attach a document if you tell them it’s attached
· Forget to spell check – you should use an auto spell check
· Send an email that shows other people’s emails. People don’t want their email shared with others they don’t know.
· Use a photo file that is too big. Photos need web friendly such as a jpeg file.
- Subject Line: Make it relevant. Many people delete their emails based on subject line.
- Use a Signature Line: Outgoing and Incoming Message Default
Name
Phone
Website or LinkedIn Profile
- Attach Vcard (optional)
- Organize email into folders and tag them in order of priority. Make sure you are checking your email regularly if you are in an active job search.
