Cell Phone Etiquette

Do you hate when someone is talking on the phone and having a private conversation in public?   Does it annoy you that someone can be so rude as to talk on the phone when someone else is trying to service them at the coffee counter or grocery checkout?  Make sure you know the proper etiquette before you make blunders that can cost you in more ways than you realize.  When you are in a job search it is crucial that you know these important cell phone tips.

Cell Phone Etiquette
Top Ten Best Practices

1. Answer your cell phone professionally: “Hi this is _____________________.”

2. Your cell phone should have a professional voice message. This is especially true in your job search.

Hi. You have reached _____________. I am unavailable to take your

call at this time. Please leave your name, number and a good time for

me to return your call. Thank You. *This holds true for your home phone as well.

3. Make sure you have a professional ring tone. It is also unprofessional to have distracting obnoxious music playing while your party is trying to reach you.

4. If you are in a meeting or with someone don’t answer your phone unless it’s an emergency or you are expecting a call about an interview. The person you are with deserves your respect and time.

5. Check your voice mail often. Make sure your cell phone is charged at all times and keep your cell charger in your car.

6. If someone beeps in (call waiting) do not answer it unless it is an emergency. It is very rude to the person you are talking to.

7. Make sure your phone is off or silenced during an interview or meeting. Remember to turn it back on ring when you are done so you don’t miss important calls.

8. If you are in a noisy place like Starbucks, go to a quiet place to have your conversation. Don’t answer your phone until you can talk. It might be a potential lead or employer and you don’t want to be distracted or tell them you can’t talk right now.

9. People providing you with customer service are humans! Don’t be rude by talking on your cell phone while they are trying to serve you.  Similarly, if you are having a private conversation in public call them back when you are in private.  No one wants to know your business.

10. Always have your schedule with you especially if you receive a call to schedule an interview. If you have your schedule on your phone make sure you know how to talk and schedule at the same time.
